Quick Answer

Venice Haze Shadow Black Contact Lenses are a soft, blended black that gives the iris a deeper, more defined read without a ringed, cartoon finish. If you want black contact lenses that still look like a real eye in daylight, start here.

What the Shade Looks Like

In the close-up, the lens sits as a deep inky black across the whole field, with the heaviest weight over the pupil and center. From there it fades gently outward, so the center-to-edge transition is a blur rather than a drawn line. There is no heavy dot pattern, no shimmer and no solid outer rim — the black simply feathers off into your own iris. The surface reads smooth and even, and any shine you notice is the natural catchlight in your own eye.

What to Wear With Black

1. Clean Daylight. White cotton poplin shirt, mid-wash straight jeans, tan leather belt, small brushed-gold hoops. Fresh skin, no shadow.

2. City Evening. Black satin slip dress, sheer tights, slim leather jacket, silver drop earrings. One coat of mascara, nothing else.

3. Soft Edge. Oatmeal knit sweater, cream wide-leg trousers, grey wool coat, pearl studs. The black lens becomes the only sharp line in the look.

Where They Fit

These are everyday lenses first. Office days, coffee runs, travel and low-key dinners all work, because the black reads as depth rather than decoration. For photos they hold their definition under flash. For parties or cosplay, they layer neatly under graphic liner and a bold lip when you want a darker mood.

Everyday Wear: Yes

Yes, this is an everyday pair. Wear it with minimal eye makeup and natural light. It only looks off when you stack heavy liner and shimmer on top, which flattens the soft fade.

Typical Contact Lens Prescription

Eye Power/SPH BC DIA CYL
OD (Right) -2.25 8.8 14.0 -1.25
OS (Left) -3.00 8.8 14.0 -1.25

Understanding Your Prescription

  • Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
    • OD - Right Eye
    • OS - Left Eye
    • OU - Both Eyes
  • SPH - Sphere (this can also be referred to as Power or PWR)
  • BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)
  • DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)

Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses

Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

  • CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)
  • AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)

Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes

  • Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
  • BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
