Quick Answer

Velvet Obsidian Black Contact Lenses are a deep, even black that reads like soft shadow on the iris rather than a flat sticker-black circle — my pick when you want black contact lenses that look intentional in daylight.

What the Shade Looks Like

In the close-up, the base color is a true black that holds from the center of the lens out through the middle of the iris, with no second color underneath and no bright ring at the edge. The black thins into a soft, blurred finish, with a fine dotted fade where the darkest field lets go.

What to Wear With Black

1. Washed denim and white cotton. A plain white tee, faded straight-leg jeans, canvas sneakers, small silver hoops. Keep makeup light — tinted moisturizer, brushed brows, clear balm.

2. All-black tailoring, softened. A black silk shirt, ankle-length cigarette trousers, matte leather loafers, one thin gold chain. Black on black lets lashes and liner read as one dark line.

3. Cream, camel and oatmeal. An oatmeal knit, a camel coat, taupe trousers, a brown leather bag. Warm neutrals soften the black and photograph well in daylight.

Where They Fit

Weekday work, coffee runs, travel days, a dinner reservation, a photo shoot — this pair doesn’t ask for a costume. For more drama, it also suits a party or cosplay look with dark, defined eyes; add heavier liner then.

Everyday Wear: Yes

Yes — it stays believable at brunch and under office light. One caveat: on very fair skin with no eye makeup at all, the black can feel contrast-heavy, so add mascara or a soft liner smudge to tie it in.

FAQ

What color are these lenses? Solid deep black from the center through the middle of the iris, with a soft diffused edge and no separate rim color.

What should I wear with black contact lenses? White cotton and denim, all-black tailoring, or cream and camel layers. Silver reads crisp; gold reads warm.

Can I wear them every day? Yes, with light natural makeup. On very fair skin, skip them for a bare-faced look if you want zero contrast.

  • Don't reuse contact lens solution.

Typical Contact Lens Prescription

Eye Power/SPH BC DIA CYL
OD (Right) -2.25 8.8 14.0 -1.25
OS (Left) -3.00 8.8 14.0 -1.25

Understanding Your Prescription

  • Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
    • OD - Right Eye
    • OS - Left Eye
    • OU - Both Eyes
  • SPH - Sphere (this can also be referred to as Power or PWR)
  • BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)
  • DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)

Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses

Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

  • CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)
  • AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)

Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes

  • Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
  • BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
