For gothic anime leads, bloodline-magic characters and Halloween con villains, red contact lenses are the piece that makes you recognizable from across the hall. Wig on, costume zipped — and finally the eyes match the build.
What This Red Actually Looks Like
Close up, the center and mid-iris hold a saturated red that thins into a soft, feathered outer blend — no hard black ring cuts the iris off, so the edge stays painterly rather than graphic. There is no dot or lace overlay competing with the color; the red itself is the pattern. In daylight it leans cool and moody instead of orange, which is what sells it as a character eye.
Lighting and Photo Notes
Red shifts with the light source. Warm con-hall lamps drag it darker, closer to wine, while direct flash with a little bounce keeps more of the straight red. Shoot one test frame in the real lighting before the photo queue forms, and review it on the back of the camera — a phone preview lies about red.
Wig, Makeup and Costume Pairing
Keep the lash line black or deep brown and leave the waterline clean so the iris keeps its shape. Red liner, red shadow and a red wig at once muddies the read; black, silver or white hair gives the cleanest contrast. For lips, berry or a cool red works, since orange-red fights the cool cast. Line the lower lash line lightly so the eye still holds in wide shots, and let deep wine and black costume accents tie the character together.

Understanding Your Prescription

Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
- OD - Right Eye
- OS - Left Eye
- OU - Both Eyes

SPH - Sphere (this can also be referred to as Power or PWR)

BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)

DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)
Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses
Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)

AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)
Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes
- Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
- BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
