Quick answer

First Light Pearl Black Contact Lenses are black contact lenses with a dense, soft-edged finish and a sheer center, so the eye reads deep and dark while the middle of the iris still catches light. They read like your own eyes, turned up one notch.

What the Shade Looks Like

The pair in the close-up is a blackened brown rather than a flat printed black. The outer field builds until it looks almost inky, then eases inward with a soft fade instead of a hard ring.

The center stays sheer, so the middle of the iris keeps its light and the eye looks rounder and more awake. In daylight the black warms to coffee-brown; indoors it reads almost true black.

What to Wear With Black

Keep the clothes quiet. Three pairings I’d build:

1. Camel and cream. A camel wool coat, an ivory ribbed knit, small gold hoops, bare skin with a sheer tint.

2. All black, soft fabrics. A black satin slip dress, straight-leg black denim, silver hoops, matte leather boots.

3. Denim and white. A plain white tee, mid-wash straight jeans, a navy blazer, a silver watch.

Where They Fit

Desk-to-dinner is where they shine: a knit, a blazer, a dark eye. They photograph well, because the sheer center keeps the iris bright under flash. For a party or a cosplay night, they read smoky and dramatic without tipping into costume.

Everyday Wear: Yes

Yes, with one caveat: they are easiest to style when your makeup stays minimal and you like a dark, defined eye. Skip them on days when you want your eyes to look completely bare.

FAQ

Are these really black? They read black at arm’s length, with a warm brown-black depth up close.

What should I pair with black contact lenses? Neutrals such as camel, cream, ivory and denim, plus one metal and light makeup.

Can I wear them every day? Yes, if your usual look leans minimal, and the sheer center keeps them from feeling heavy.

Contact Lens Care Guidelines

  • We recommend a rub and rinse before soaking soft lenses for a minimum of 6 hours in their container.
  • Don't wear contact lenses overnight.
  • Don't wear your contact lenses in the shower or while swimming.
  • Don't reuse contact lens solution.
  • Don't use saline solution for contact lens cleaning or disinfection.
  • Replace your contact lens case every two to three months.
  • Take out your contacts if they are bothering you.
  • Never use saliva as a wetting agent.

Typical Contact Lens Prescription

Eye Power/SPH BC DIA CYL
OD (Right) -2.25 8.8 14.0 -1.25
OS (Left) -3.00 8.8 14.0 -1.25

Understanding Your Prescription

  • Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
    • OD - Right Eye
    • OS - Left Eye
    • OU - Both Eyes
  • SPH - Sphere (this can also be referred to as Power or PWR)
  • BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)
  • DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)

Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses

Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

  • CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)
  • AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)

Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes

  • Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
  • BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
