Purple Contact Lenses for Characters Who Live in the Shadows
Fabled Purple Contact Lenses: Con prep usually starts with the wig and ends with the eyes. I held these up to my desk lamp the night before a Saturday shoot and knew the look would work: a violet field that reads clearly on camera instead of washing out to grey. That is why I keep reaching for purple contact lenses when a character belongs in twilight, tomb corridors or moonlit ruins.
The Visual Match
Phantom Aura purple contact lenses carry one idea from pupil to edge. Around the opening sits a light lavender, almost lilac zone, and it softens outward into a deeper orchid violet rather than stopping at a hard line. There is no black rim and no printed texture to fight with — no dots, no mesh, no halo ring. Lighting and Photography
Light changes these more than makeup does. In flat warm indoor light they sit soft and slightly dusty; under a ring light or a cool LED panel the inner lilac zone opens up and the violet brightens. For convention photos I angle my chin just off the lens so the light catches the center instead of blowing it out with flash. Against a dark backdrop the color holds; against a white wall, expect a lighter, airier read.
Styling and Makeup
Keep the eye area cool and clean. A thin black wing, a soft grey or taupe crease and a plum-to-berry lip in the same family keep the purple cosplay lens at the front of the frame. Warm orange or heavy gold shadow pulls violet toward brown in photos, so I skip it. Silver, charcoal or deep plum costume pieces work well, and the wig can be black, ash lavender or silver-white without fighting the lens.
A friend who wore them through a group shoot summed it up: I kept forgetting about them until someone zoomed in on the photo.

Understanding Your Prescription

Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
- OD - Right Eye
- OS - Left Eye
- OU - Both Eyes

BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)

DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)
Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses
Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)

AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)
Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes
- Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
- BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
