Quick Answer

Charcoal Black Contact Lenses are a soft, smoky take on black contact lenses: a deep charcoal field with a warm brown center, so the iris reads defined instead of blanked out.

What the Shade Looks Like

Up close the base is dense charcoal-black, not glossy ink. Around the pupil it warms into soft brown, and that center-to-mid transition does the blending. No glitter, no spiral, no hard outer ring — the edge simply deepens toward the rim and melts into the iris. In daylight the field reads dark grey-black; indoors it looks closer to true black.

What to Wear With Black

1. White Cotton and Washed Denim. Plain white tee, light-wash denim jacket, straight-leg jeans, silver hoops, canvas tote. Crisp palette, clean contrast.

2. Quiet Tailoring. Oatmeal wool blazer, ivory silk-cotton shirt, charcoal trousers, black loafers, brushed gold earrings.

3. Slate for Evening. Charcoal slip dress, sheer black tights, slate wool coat, gunmetal studs, berry lip. Keep eyes bare: brown mascara, cream shadow, soft brow.

Where They Fit

Desk days, travel days, dinner reservations, and party photos — anywhere you want a defined eye without a full face of makeup. They also work for cosplay, since the dark field photographs as black.

Everyday Wear: Yes

Yes, with one caveat. They slot into a daily rotation if you like a deeper eye and you’re wearing at least mascara. On bare-faced, bright-sun days the charcoal edge can feel like a lot.

FAQ

Are they truly black or brown? In feel they’re black contact lenses: a charcoal-black field with warm brown that only shows near the pupil.

What should I pair with them? White, cream, oatmeal, charcoal, slate, and denim blue. Silver keeps it cool; brushed gold warms it.

Can I wear them every day? Many people do. Wear them when you want definition, and skip them when you want a completely bare eye.

Typical Contact Lens Prescription

Eye Power/SPH BC DIA CYL
OD (Right) -2.25 8.8 14.0 -1.25
OS (Left) -3.00 8.8 14.0 -1.25

Understanding Your Prescription

  • Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
    • OD - Right Eye
    • OS - Left Eye
    • OU - Both Eyes
  • SPH - Sphere (this can also be referred to as Power or PWR)
  • BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)
  • DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)

Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses

Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

  • CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)
  • AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)

Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes

  • Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
  • BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
