Why the eyes carry a cosplay
Red contact lenses do more work than any prop you can carry. You can sew the jacket, glue the wig, paint the nails, and a phone snapshot still flattens the character. Put a saturated red on the iris and the face changes first.
Reading this red
The pair in the image sits as a deep glossy ruby rather than flat candy red. The pupil opens into the iris through a soft center-to-mid transition, and the shade carries across the visible field, so the eye reads genuinely red instead of a ring floating over your own color. The outer edge stays soft — no hard dark rim slicing the iris into a sticker — and the surface looks clean and wet, with no dotted mesh over the color.
Lighting and photos
Red is the first shade to go muddy. Warm hotel bulbs push it toward wine; daylight or a white ring light snaps it back to scarlet. On a con floor, get your key light in front of the face rather than above it, because top light drops the iris into shadow under the brow. Tilt the chin down a touch so the highlight lands inside the iris, and the color survives even in a crowded group shot.
Outfit and makeup
Keep the face cool so the red does the talking: charcoal liner, matte grey-brown shadow, black mascara. Copper or orange shadows fight the lens on camera. For gothic anime builds, a lace collar, ribbon choker and black-and-red layering finish the costume — add a cat-ear headband when the character leans playful. For a party, the same pair over a leather jacket and a red lip is the whole outfit.

Understanding Your Prescription

Eye - Which eye the prescription line item is for:
- OD - Right Eye
- OS - Left Eye
- OU - Both Eyes

BC - Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)

DIA - Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)
Toric (Astigmatism Correcting) Lenses
Some patients require lenses that are toric or astigmatism correcting. Prescriptions for these types of lenses will also contain two additional numbers that relate to the correction of the astigmatism. These two numbers are usually separated by an "X" and read as "times", they are indicated with the following symbols/abbreviations:

CYL - Cylinder (usually a number between -4.00 and +4.00)

AX - Axis (usually a number between 0 and 180)
Additional Contact Lens Prescription Notes
- Your prescription will also contain an expiration date. This is typically one year from the date that the contact lenses were fitted.
- BC values range from about 8.0 to 10.0. The doctor fits the lens with the curvature most appropriate for your eye. Most lenses come in several different BC values. If your prescription does not contain a BC value, this is likely because your brand of lens only comes in one base curve.
